Who or what is redrosethorns?
redrosethorns was founded by me, Kirsty Anne Richards, at the beginning of the COVID pandemic in April 2020. Originally, I needed to make extra money and sold (or tried to sell) jewellery and candles. But my passion was always in the subjects of mental health, gender and sexuality. I also loved reading and dreamed of becoming a writer. So, I joined a writing community and started the journey of writing my memoir, all about sexism.
In all honesty, my little candle-making business was not doing well, and I was planning to move to London, which meant that I could not take my candles with me. I was ready to give up on this business venture, but my intuition insisted I continue to pursue it, only change direction. After much pondering, I thought, why not combine all my loves of writing, reading, mental health, education, gender and sexuality and create something new? I had nothing to lose, so fuck it! I began a print publication with the intent of making an annual literary feminist publication.
This path turned out better than I had expected. In 2022, I published the first edition of redrosethorns magazine. Then I started an online publication, and a year later, in 2023, I published the second edition of redrosethorns magazine. And now, I am expanding this platform.
So, who or what is redrosethorns? Well, my pitch says that we are an educational publication company centred around mental health, self-care, gender and sexuality. But what the bloody hell does that mean?
redrosethorns publishes work around the above subjects through our online journal, redrosethorns journal (I am not very creative with names, so everything is called redrosethorns something or other). And, of course, we have our annual print publication. But more than that, we offer workshops to assist in building one’s self-esteem (because writing is hard, and confidence comes from having solid self-worth). We also create educational content on mental health, gender and sexuality to provide more in-depth information on how all of these subjects are connected.
That’s pretty much it in a nutshell.
